20 Jun Culley’s Carolina Reaper Gin
Review by Michael Elias
Product: Culley’s Carolina Reaper Gin
Location of Manufacture: New Zealand
Review: For some of you winter is coming, but for us down under its already here and if you are anything like me you don’t mind maintaining your warmth with alcohol……heaters, jumpers, blankets are so overrated. Alcohols more fun!!! So I was intrigued when I found this bottle slipped in with the regular chilli sauces, chutneys and marinades that are normally sent for review. And a gin made with Caroline Reaper chilli ? Holy word that starts with s and rhymes with hit. Thats bordering madness but its where all the true geniuses work. I don’t think there is any other gin like it.
So its hot….damn hot.
The alcohol is at 45% which is also quite strong. I tried it alone and with tonic(i’m old school) and it was very nice. The heat is intense but can be balanced out with the right mix of ingredients in a cocktail, so i’m sure the right bartender can find a wider variety of applications and ingredients to try balance that heat out and come up with some deliciously devilish concoctions. It’s an 8 out of 10 on my heat rating
Verdict: Culley’s first foray into alcohol didn’t disappoint….but they are always in fine form with their sauces so it was great to see them use the same expertise and attention to detail with this fine alcohol. It’s a real stiff gin so not for the faint hearted and the heat…much like the force….is strong with this one so expect a nice burning fire from entry to exit if you get my drift. My final score is a 9 out of 10.
